Tax Time – IRS Scam Season Opens
As the 2015 filing season starts, we have seen an increase in IRS Scams. If you get a call from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
- If you think or know you might owe taxes, call the IRS @ 1-800-829-1040. The IRS can help you with a payment issue, IF THERE IS SUCH AN ISSUE.
- If you know you don’t owe taxes and the caller is making bogus threats, then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General @ 1-800-366-4484. Try and capture the phone number the scammer is calling from.
- You can also file a complaint using; https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/#crnt&panel1-1. At the top of the home page there is an “ALERT! Click here to report someone falsely claiming to be from the government…”
The IRS will always send taxpayers a written notification of any tax due via the U.S. mail. The IRS NEVER asks for credit card, debit card or prepaid card information over the telephone.
