New Development 
 Swedish home furnishings retailer, IKEA, will open a 293,000-square-foot store east of SH 161 at Mayfield Road, north of Interstate 20.  Pending approvals, construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2016, with an opening in 2017.

Raising Cane’s will begin construction in 2016 on a new restaurant at Camp Wisdom and Magna Carta.

Dairy Queen plans to build a new restaurant west of SH 360 and north of Green Oaks in 2016.

iHop
is building a restaurant on SH 360 and Camp Wisdom in front of the On the Border restaurant.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2016 on a newWalMart west of SH 161 between Arkansas Lane and Pioneer Parkway. It will include a grocery store, retail and an automotive center. The city expects restaurant development in the near future on the 11 out lots near the store.

Aldi
is planning a new grocery store at Great Southwest Parkway and Bardin Road beginning in 2016.

QT
is set to begin construction soon on a store on the southeast corner of Lake Ridge and Interstate 20.

CST
will build a Corner Store in 2016 on the northeast corner of Lake Ridge and Camp Wisdom. The store will feature seven gasoline pump service islands with a covered canopy and a single bay automatic car wash.

Prairie Lights Glow Nov. 26-Jan. 3 
The city’s popular drive-thru holiday light park, Prairie Lights, opens Thursday, Nov. 26, for another season of holiday fun and will remain open until Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016.  This year, the park will have brand-new displays in lands such as “Prehistoric Christmas” and others.  Free carnival rides will be back, as well as the walk-thru and an all-new show in the Holiday Magic Theater.

Grand Prairie Tree Lighting

Have a very Prairie Christmas in downtown Grand Prairie. The annual tree lighting ceremony will take place at City Hall, and will include choral entertainment from students in the Grand Prairie Independent School District.

The festivities will include the ever-so-excellent GPISD elementary school ensemble, middle school carolers and high school choirs.

The students will raise their voices to ring in the season and light the tree at City Hall starting at 6 p.m.

Low Cost Vaccinations and More

The Spay Neuter Network’s mobile clinic will be doing vaccinations and sterilization surgeries at the Prairie Paws Adoption Center, 2222 W. Warrior Tr., on Monday, Aug. 17.  Appointments must be made in advance for sterilization.  Additionally, the Spay Neuter Network is offering $20 sterilizations on Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes throughout the entire month of August.  Call 972-472-3500 to schedule an appointment or for more information.

Battle for the Blood:  Grand Prairie vs. Irving

Dallas County Commissioner, Dr. Elba Garcia, has challenged Grand Prairie and Irving to compete for the most summer blood donations.  Let’s show Irving that Team Grand Prairie can win this.

Neighborhood Enrichment Team

The city of Grand Prairie Neighborhood Enrichment Team (NET) is a collaborative effort between city departments focusing on nuisance and chronic problem properties that have not responded to traditional methods of compliance.  The Police Department, Code Enforcement, Fire Department, Housing and Neighborhood Services, Building Inspections, Environmental Services, Public Works, City Attorney and parks, Arts and Recreation Department are all part of the NET.

To be considered a “Nuisance or Chronic Problem Property,” the property must exhibit repeated non-compliance, constitute a long term public nuisance, or is of such a severe nature that the health, safety, and well-being of the citizens and businesses of the city of Grand Prairie is at risk.

Lake Parks at Joe Pool Lake
Due to May flooding at Joe Pool Lake, Lynn Creek Park and Loyd Park have been partially or fully closed through most of the summer.  The city’s Parks, Arts and Recreation Department has been working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to get the lake parks back to normal.  The city hopes to have parks open for Labor Day weekend, but this is subject to change.

GP Pipeline Direct

New Fire Station No. 10
City officials broke ground on July 2 for a new Fire Station Nov. 10 located at the corner of Balboa and Grand Peninsula Drive.  The $5 million, 12,000-square-foot facility will house 18 firefighters and paramedics, and feature four truck bays.  Architecture for the building will be a nautical theme with a tower element resembling a light house.  The new station is scheduled to open in May 2016.

New Development
The city has approved the site plan for a new 190,000-square-foot Walmart Supercenter east of State Highway 161 between Arkansas Lane and Pioneer Parkway.  Walmart’s coporate office is still in the scheduling phase.
Construction is scheduled to begin soon on a new Aldi grocery store at Great Southwest Parkway and Bardin Road.
QuikTrip will begin construction soon on a gas station and convenience store on Lake Ridge and Interstate 20.
Emerus is opening a 29,332-square-foot emergency hospital on Kingswood and SH 360.  The hospital will provide emergency care services and nursing care for patients who require an overnight stay of longer than 24 hours.  Construction is scheduled to begin soon.
Uplift Academy will expand its downtown Grand Prairie campus with a new 63,000-square-foot high school building north of Church Street between 2nd and 4th Streets.
State Farm will open an office on Lake Ridge south of Grand Peninsula just south of the memory care center.
Construction is set to begin on the 247-unit Reserve at Grand Prairie Apartments at the northeast corner of SH 360 and Outlet Parkway.
A new 304-unit Timberview Ranch apartment complex is under construction at SH 360 north of Crossroads Church.
The first phase of the 199-unit Enclave apartments at Mira Lagos East is under construction at the southeast corner of Grand Peninsula and Balboa.  A second 108-unit phase is also planned for this site.

Construction will begin soon on the 334-unit Quadrangles apartments at the southeast corner of I-20 and Endicott.

A new 249-unit Villas of Grand Prairie apartment complex is planned for Arkansas Lane and SH 161.
A 302-unit Residences at 3000 Bardin condominium development is planned at the northwest corner of Endicott and Bardin.

 

GP July 4th Fireworks

Celebrate July 4 in Grand Prairie
Grand Prairie will celebrate Independence Day with one fireworks show at Lone Star Park on Saturday, July 4 after the last race.  Parking is $20 per car and admission into Lone Star Park is $5 per person.  For more information, visit lonestarpark.com

In observance of Independence Day, there will be no trash or recycling collection on Saturday, July 4 and city of Grand Prairie administrative offices will be closed on Friday, July 3.

The Prairie Paws Adoption Center, 2222 W. Warrior Tr. is at capacity.  To clear the shelter quickly, all dogs, puppies and kittens are available for adoption for $20 and adult cats are $10 through the month of June.

GP Animal Services – After the visit from Renee Johnston at our June 4th meeting we did not realize just how many pages there would be nor did we know what it would cost to make a ton of copies for those who wanted them. So, we are opting to publish the website where you can find these ordinances.
